That's a bit of bad news Patrick, especially if you put a lot of work into it befor the penny dropped.
If you are on the Island of Malta as I understand it, all the older cars had the small pinnion to large metal sector plate drive method of window operation, certainly Triumph Heralds had them and the last time I was on holiday in Malta, Heralds were ten a penny. The Austin/Rover Metro have them if you want a newer donor, all pre-electric window Fords have them etc etc. and in your climate any old car by the roadside should be a potential donor.
Good luck with your experiment, and watch out for monkey metal, [Mazac] bearings for the small pinnion, there was a lot of it about in that era.

Brilliant thought guys, window winder search than!! i thought of using a gearbox from an electric window motor, but they look weak for that application.
I will let it run like this for a while than upgrade accordingly.......................

Patrick Why don't you leave it like that, turning the wrong way.......you could offer prizes to anyone who could get it around an obstacle course!!  Richard once mentioned to me, that he had heard that someone had used a car window winder mechanism as a steering box, no details I'm afraid, I don't even know if it was mechanical or an electric window, but mechanical I guess; (I think the electric one's use a cable drive on a drum). I think the mechanical units use a small gear and a segment of the larger one to save space. May be worth a trip to the breakers, just for research of course! Keep trying Walter I had this problem when I did my steering gearbox, and you'll be glad to know the fix is very easy. When you use two gears it turns it the output lever the wrong way but if you turn the output lever 180 degrees so it points up rather than down, the steering now goes the correct way. |

Thanks for the input, i know that could be done but the way i did mine there was no way the arm could fit 180 deg out.
I will put some pics up so you can all understand what i did.

Hi Patrick, I like the additions, I too made wiring covers to keep things neat, and little fingers at bay! I know you said the wheel caps have the LR logo, but it's not clear in the pic's, you'll have to get the white paint out and pick out the lettering.  The tow point looks good too! Ok Last pics before it gets officially handed down to my darling.......... Did some seat cusions, not the best upholstery job but it should do. Checked if it fit in the other landy, just about! Tried to finish what i could as time is running out. It will be in the garage for future upgrades soon......... Pics     Logo on hub cap......  Thats it for now, but stay tuned for further upgrades in the new year, although i will be involved in the rebuild of the full size landy. Patrick |
