Hi, My toylander build
« on: 07 October, 2008, 02:50:03 PM »
Hi to all, i just found this forum!!

A little intro, I am Patrick from Malta (aka Gremlin), i have had the plans for 2 years now and collected all the bits before i started the build. I am a landrover owner as well so what other better way to introduce the offspring to landrovers!!

Here is my very modified toylander build.

here goes.................... I started this in may so the pics are over a few months, another post with the rest will follow.

So, my other project has started, finally i am cutting down the bits and piecies to build the toylander, here are some pics. I will update as i go along........... ;D

Plans......

Front wheel & stub axle assy........

Mini speedo........

Lights.....

transaxle + motor......

And what it might look like.......

progress pics, assembly going smoothly.........

body is 75% ready, no time to start fitting all the stuff, especially the suspension.

tyres

How its going to look........

Ok progress this week......

Mocked up the steering and fitted tyres to rims (2 tubes blew up grrr >:(), made all the holes for the lights and stuck the front panel on. I also got some lights to fit the front.........

Lights test fitting...........

Springs......

Funky Steering wheel............

Well thats it for now, things will start to slow down from here on as the complex bits take some time to get right unlike the body work which was a cut, glue and fit job.......

Next will be steering coloum, front axle location and arms and fitting the springs.............................

Setup the steering linkages + steering coloum, and got every thing in place after hours of head scratching trying to make everything work together. I also set up the front springs and associated hardware to go with it, including some spring retainers..................pics.......

Next up are the arms and panhard rod, hopefully i will finish them in the next couple of days, afterwhich i will get cracking with the rear setup, which will be a copy of the front but a bit more beefier, due to the torque loads from the motor. I still need to get the rear springs sorted as space is tight at the rear. Anybody have an idea what i can use as small shocks???

This weeks progress......

Finalised the front and got cracking with the rear. Clearances at full lock are tight but it should be fine........ I also put some bump stops....... ;D

Skid plate to follow.....

Thats it for now, hopefully next week all the major mechanical bits will be ready.........

Update......

Finished off the rear suspension including the panhard rod (sorry no pics), i then turned the whole thing over and finished off the woodwork. I installed the dash permanently, seat and side panels and a cover for the motor. I also made a tunnel to cover the suspension mounting points, and will also house the forward and reverse lever.

Thats it for now..............

Update...............

Nothing much, i finished the rear suspension with the springs installed and retained, put some bling tailgate hinges............

The rear hubs have been a source of many headaches but it seems to have been sorted, lots of lathe work involved to get everything rotating true. Now all i need is to weld all the bits together, turn them down again and press fit into the rim.

Progress is getting slow now, next up, windscreen assy, i got all the ali bits to make it, i still need the perspex, finalise the body work and get cracking with filling and sanding (i hate it)

Update...................

Did the rear hubs and spacers (no pics)

Not much but i cut all the panel lines, including the vents, and finished off the front mudgards including the filler, sanding the thing down for paint now. Pics...................

Update...............

Its been slow progress, this week i opened up the transaxle to check everything was ok, cleaned it up, new oil and fitted the wheels with the hubs. Made the windscreen hinges and the windscreen. Started the painting process.........

pics..... blue springs.................

The rest.............

Next week i will finish the bonnet and start painting the bodywork, from there on its reassembly and wiring........... cant wait to go for a spin :D

Took some time off the project............. goodies arrived by post......................

I made the bonnet, what a pig to make!!! it took me a whole day to get it to sit right and to shape, I didn't read the damn plans properly, plus there is no margin for error between the woodwork and the bonnet! Not the best job but it will have to do, also made the hinges with a sort of landy shape to them.

I also found these little latches which made a wonderful job of holding the windscreen upright, pretty pleased with these!

Painted all the under carrage metal bits, now ready for assembly, next is sealing all the underside and painting, might use stonegard as a finish underneath............

Thats it for now...........

Another update.............This is where i am at the moment with the build.

Slowly but surely we are getting there................All the under side have been sealed and treated with stonegard, i than got busy getting all the undercarrage together for fitting................ pics

Than added the wheels.............

Than i lay it on the ground for the first time on its wheels.......................

This is a view if you get run over in reverse ;D

Than i started to get silly.......... just to see that it all works................

And finally why not see how i fit......................... :D

It can support my weight no problem and the springs work well but it will need shocks for sure. Next is sealing all the top woodwork, finish sanding the bonnet and than a the final lick of paint in bright yellow! Than its assembly of the final bits plus wiring, than time for a test run............. cant wait!!

Update............

Finished the capping and all the tailgate hardware, i tried small chain but it looked horrid :-X, so its held in the open position with long cable ties, i will make a set of descent cables later.....................

I then found an old steering indicator switch off my landy which was duly dismantled to pinch the stalk off, made a block of wood held with a u bolt, this will operate just the horn.

pics....................

Progress is slow but its nearly there.........................

Update.............. in the little time i have, i managed to do some little jobs.........................

Dash nearly finished, some final touches and a switch is all that remains, front lights and grill installed, rear grab handles installed.

This week end hopefully i will try to start and finish off the bumper.

Pics.......................

Thats all.............

Update................

Finished the bumper, well fitting it, it still need a lick of black paint. It was ment to be made of ali box section but a piece of red wood just was perfect, infact better than ali as i did not have any welding to get it to look right! I mounted it higher than on plan as i think it looks better. Did the skid plate in the process also!

pics...................

This maybe the future winch motor....................

I can finally start to wire the thing up next week, i still need to do some thinking on how i am going to make a functional kid proof/abuse foward and reverse lever to the tunnel, than its sourcing a set of batteries............

Thats it for now..................

Looks good and I like the Camel Trophy colours. I also have used fat tyres, but my youngest finds it difficult to trun the steering wheel when the car is stationary, I am making a small steering box to rectify this now.

Hi Mike, i think i will have the same problem, the steering is pretty heavy and very direct, i had been pondering what to use for steering box. As a start i am going to vary the drop arm ratio to the steering hubs and see if that improves, i also still have to vary the castor angle so that might help as well. What will you be using as a steering box??

It need to be a sturdy bit of kit as all the little gearboxes i found are from toys with little plastic cogs!

I purchased some metal gears from here www.technobots.co.uk and also some needle roller bearings to run the gears on. I purchased a large gear with 30 teeth and a smaller one with 15 teeth, so should be a reduction of 2 to 1. Castor will help with self centering, not sure if it will help with the turning effort. I tried different length steering arms, but it didn't seem to help much. I'll post some pictures as I build the steering box and let you know how we get on.

Hi Gremlin
Love your toylander build, seems to be going well.
I have the plans now and am starting by making some of the metalwork. I have the rear axle more or less finished, and the main part of the front axle done. I have turned up some stub axles ready to weld on to the threaded rod king pins, but not finished yet. It will be a simple swing axle arrangement. I too am wondering about steering arrangement, and am thinking along the lines of a 2 to 1 reduction using chain and sprockets. Small sprocket on lower end of steering collumn, linked by chain to larger sprocket on opposite side of car, larger sprocket driving the pushrod to steering arms on king pins. The steering arms will be angled inwards to give some sort of ackerman steering effect.
I'd be interested in any comments.
Best Wishes all

Hi All, just made some adjustment to the steering, basically sorted the castor angle, as i had loads of negative castor due to the way the suspension was built. Now it has some positive castor on. I shortened the arm on the steering rod and it seems to have improved, time will tell if my daughter will manage. Pics to follow shortly of progress.
