When best to paint
« on: 01 February, 2010, 11:59:50 AM »
I have finished my tub and now ready to move on to the interesting bit

Just wanted some advice on when best to paint the tub... I was planning to give it a couple of MDF primer coats before any mechanical & electrical stuff,  and leave the colour paint until last.  How have others approached this?

thanks

It is the best method Sam.

Painting final colour brefore the parts are fitted is hair tearing stuff.

Hi Sam,

I built the tub and fitted everything as it was completed (axles, windscreen etc) just to test fit and get the holes on the right places.

Once this was done, I stripped the parts off and painted the tub in one lot. This way, I could paint inside any holes so that moisture couldn't get into the wood.
It also gives a 'fully finished' and neater appearance to the car, no splashes on wiring or other bits left on.

I suppose it's up to you really, but you want the car to look 'professionally' built, rather than 'bodged'.

Alternatively, you can fit parts and get holes in the right position, then remove them until the tub is painted, and then assemble the vehicle.

Regards,
Mark.

I agree with Mark.
This way you 'll have a bit more work, but the best result!

Was reading thru some old posts and am nearing completion of the plywood body.

From the advice given previously it seems that assembly then disassembly then fill and paint is best approach.

Can I confirm that this means do not even undercoat/ prime the metal parts until after disassembly

Hi Venk

If you check The Build Has Started in the TL1 thread you will see what I have done. I built the car completely, ie. fitted all the metal work and drilled all the holes that were needed for wiring etc, then I stripped it all off to the bare shell and painted it.

It is flying back together and I know that there is a finish paint job behind every nut and bolt etc.

Hope it helps and good luck with the rest of the project.

Regards Mark
