Waiting on my Build Pack
« on: 02 October, 2008, 08:29:17 AM »
Well I took the plunge and bought the plans / build manual for a Toylander 2 yesterday.
now just waiting for the Postman.
Figure I have a long way to go
Lets see my son is 2 years old tomorrow and my daughter is nearly 4

so with luck i hope to complete the build within 6 months, so that by spring they are trundling around in a toylander.
I hope to document my progress (never done anything like this before, but i am an ex sub-contract engineer (metalwork)
Also my thoughts, lows and highs during the entire process.

If anyone has hints, tips and the like I am open to suggestions..

Need to go over my tools and also find some space for the build (real glad I have a spare room) 8-)

Congratulations, you are in for a *lot* of fun.

When it comes to hints and tips, make sure your workspace have plenty of room.  You will be handling large sheets of plywood/mdf, and the car itself is both heavy and quite large when completed.  A good work table that will hold the car body and give you access from all sides will save your back from some pain.

Besides that, I do not have much to add.  The plans and build manual are excellent.  Read through it before you start.

Good luck, we're looking forward to your posts on the building.

Take your time with the body, don't rush cutting the panels, and when you screw and glue it all together make sure you measure everything and make sure its all square. This will help later on, when you come to screw all the other bits on.

Got home after work and there on the doormat was a nice Fat envelope.

needless to say its the plans and build manual

Already read the manual once tonight, will spend the next couple of days just reading it and looking at the details and pictures.

Looks very comprehensive, there are a few diagrams that look a little cluttered, but expect it will come clear once i start.

Yes measure twice, cut once.

Already entered into discussion with my other half about where it will be assembled. she is of the opinion i should finish building the shed (lay the hardcore, then the sand and cement, then the slabs then build the shed)......Hmm sounds like a lot of work, also it would be damp outside this time of year, so I am holding out for using the spare room or other half of kitchen area (big kitchen, plus i can control the temperture / humidity)

oh well we shall see.

I am not up for using the paper patterns direct on the material (already decided on the MR MDF). I think I also will put the patterns onto something more enduring, that way i could in the future reuse them if need be.

I see that a trip to the local DIY store is the order of the day just for tooling (had my car broken into and toolbox stolen a month ago, so need to replace a lot of stuff).

Wicked , I must admit to being quited enthused / excited over this.

I have looked at all the you tube videos I can locate and see all the smiles and also vehicles.

Hi Richard,
I too was dubious about using the supplied patterns, just in case I made a bugger of cutting something, so I had them all photocopied at 'Pronto Print' for just ?12, and cut these up instead!  ;)
I also would advise care when cutting out, as a few of us have encountered problems with the accuracy and symmetry of the drawings.
As for check twice, cut once, I would advise check 4 times, then cut tentatively! ;D
Not wishing to blow my own trumpet, but my build blog may be useful in pointing out some of the pitfalls I had during the build. (see link under 'Members' against markh15).
Keep busy (and warm),
Regards,
Mark.
