Another Newbie
« on: 10 September, 2011, 09:30:43 PM »
Hi Toylanders,

Newbie  migman here ( Tony )

I have just got the plans for the Geepstar and i am looking forward to the build
Ive been reading a lot of the posts on the forum and carnt wait to get started,
Not really looking forward to the electronics bit but will get there hopefully,

Been looking at 24 volt motors on ebay and just Wonder if using the ones off
the electric scooters would be of any use = 24 volt / output 300w / rated current 16.5A /
rated speed 2800 / 11 tooth sprocket / Model MY1016 .

It would be great to see a compleat Toylander if anyone in the Rotherham area could let us have a browse,

Regards migman

Hello Tony,

Welcome to the forum, I can't help you with a geepster, but I have built a T2, if you look at the thread "Grandpa's got a new project, page 18", the last photo's I posted were taken in Valley Park, Herringthorpe.

Where about's in Rotherham are you?

Regards,

Brian.

Hello Tony, not far away then, I'm only at Herringthorpe, if you want to visit just give me a ring, 01709 379400, we can arrange something then.

My pilot is only available 4 while 6pm after school, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays which are the days we pick him up from School.

Regards,

Brian.

Hi Tony
ref you query about motors.
The standard wheels are approx 15 in diameter and that equates to about 50 inches circumference. I assume that you will use something similar in size.
To make the vehicle travel at 4 mph, and remain legal, you will require a wheel speed of about 85 rpm.

A motor with a spindle speed of 2800 and 11 tooth sprocket, would need to have a wheel sprocket of about 350 teeth to achieve this, so some form of intermediate gearbox is obviously required.
Thats why Richards motors have built in gearing and invalid buggy axles also have theit own reduction .

If anyone's interested in the calculations, ( 85 rev per min is 5100 (85 x 60) rev per hour, so thats 255,000 (5100 x 50) inches per hour. There are 63360 ins in a mile so that 255,000/63360 or almost exactly 4mph.)

Have a look at the posts by jimmyybob, he's built a tractor using similar motors and shows how he overcame the problem.

If you fancy the challenge, best of luck, personally I think it's a huge amount of work and I prefer to use motors with built in reduction gears.
Best Wishes
Walter

Hello Walter,

Thank you for your advise on the motor,

I will be using standard wheel size and will go for the Mobility scooter option for sure
no point in causing unnecessary complications in the build.

Thank You
Best Regards Tony.
