Hi Walter,

Wow, that looks superb! We will be interested to learn what you have used to make the headlamp surrounds, windscreen frame, petrol tank etc. I guess this is based on RLT running gear.

Regards
Mike
(will post my own secret project in a week or two when it is slightly more advanced and I can take a decent picture of it!)

Hi Mike
Yes, it's all based on RLT items and follows Toylander build principles throughout. My sincere thanks to Richard who was most helpful throughout this project, and without whom I'd still be scratching my head!

The basic construction is as per Toylander principles with the main body tub and cab all made from 12mm mdf, but with 18mm for the cab roof and flatbed.

The wheels and rear axles are Toylander TL2 items, the front axle is modified slightly but based on TL2. Steering collumn is a shortened TL2 item and steering wheel is standard from RLT. I am using invalid buggy motor, and chain drive to wheels, but the motor mounting dimensions are designed to be suitable for RLT motors.

The sidelights, taillights, and headlights are all from RLT, super items, all with led lamps to keep the current drain low. The taillights also incorporate brake lights operated from an inertia switch.
Here's a pic to show some closer details.

I'll post some details and pictures when I've got some free time!
Regards
Walter

Sorry Walter but this post just keeps generating more and more questions! What have you used to make the mudguards? I am thinking of making a Defender next and using trailer mudguards split longitudinally for the wheel arches.

Hi Mike
The headlight surrounds are disks cut from mdf, about 15mm bigger than the light unit. These are then rounded over on the router table. After that the centres are cut out to make the ring.
You really need a router table to round the edges, and a bandsaw to cut out the centres. It's probably possible to use a jigsaw but you'd have to be sure to support the work well, the ring isn't going to be all that sturdy when you are cutting out the centre.
The sidelight mounts, are alluminium sheeet to form the bracket, and 18mm mdf behind as the body, cut to the same shape. Again the edges were routed round, and a small groove was cut to allow the cable to egress through the bracket into the cab side.

Hi Guys
In answer to some of the other questions.
The fuel tank is made from an offcut of 6 in plastic sewer pipe with the ends capped with 12 mm mdf, and the windscreen surround? It's just a piece of very thin board, the back panel from an IKEA wardrobe.

:)  Just had a look at the You Tube videos.  Super little truck a great variation the Toylander idea.  How did you make up the wheel arches ?

Hi Paul
Richard gave me the idea, back to back layers of bendable mdf. I used 3 layers actually for effect, but two work very well. Then car body filler to profile the edges.
Best Wishes

Walter,
Superb! I love the hidden catch for the motor cover and the way the planks of wood are staggered like the real thing.
Also, the multi-bolt front wheel covers.
Well done.
