Help with hub sizes for factory wheels
« on: 19 July, 2011, 04:19:09 PM »
Hi all,

Could anybody help with some dimensions of the factory wheels hub sizes so I can crack on with some steel fabrication until I can get hold of some wheels from Richard when Toylander re-open after their summer break?

Ideally I need dimensions for the width of the hub, the I.D. of the hub (without bearing) and the offset of the hub from the rim. If anyone has some photo's they would be appreciated too.

Finally, in the photo of the light green TL 1 linked from the Toylander home page, are the wheels/tires the 'town and country' versions as they are the type I would like to order?

T.I.A.

Hi Rich
I've just been out and measured the front wheel. The hub is 65 mm wide, That's measured by taking it off the axle and putting a tape through it. That is with the bearing and the grease seals in position. I guess that if I took the bearings out it would be about 60 mm. as the grease seals seem to protrude slightly beyond the hub.
Laying a straight edge across the rim, there is ony about 3 mm clearance to the hub so the offset is minimal. Possibly about 5 mm with the bearings removed. The hub is central in the rim, so this applies to both sides.
If you need to know, the bearings fit on a ONE INCH axle, not 25 mm, but I don't know the size of the hub without bearings, and they're not easy to remove.

Hope this helps a little
As for the tyres, when you're ready to order, give Richard a ring and you can say which tyres you want from the pic, thats what I did anyway.

Walter,

Thanks for the info it will help me to progress a bit more.

I have been out today and procured a pile of steel to make a start with, unfortunately I bought 25mm tube for the front hubs  :( so I may have to re-think that. For the rear's I will be getting some hub adapters machined to jump from the 19mm scooter axle to the Toylander wheels hence the request for the plain hub dimensions.

Cheers,

Rich

Hi Rich
I know you'll have to wait for Richard to check, but he may have wheels for 25 mm axles now. I had some which were 1 inch but best to check as you have the material in hand. Don't forget that it isn't realistic to simply run larger wheels directly on the scooter axles, if it is designed for small wheels, It will be over geared and lack pulling power particularly on hills.

Hi Walter,

The axle I have was running 13" wheels so I didn't think it was much of a jump, I will also be running a tacho feedback system similar to 'Quadra's' which will give full torque at all throttle positions, if necessary I will fit a higher wattage motor to make up any deficit.

I will have another look through the manual re the wheel bearing id as 25mm seemed to ring a bell but I will wait & confirm with Richard as you suggest.

I also need to have a good look in the manual to see if I can find the construction details on the stub axles, I am sure I have seen them but I haven't come across them on the last couple of flick throughs I've had...

Cheers for the help,

Rich

Hi
Thats fine, as it had large wheels to start with, my buggy had small wheels so I had to gear the drive to the wheels.
The details for the stub axles are page 42 in my manual but it may be different now as the manual has been updated since I had mine.

My manual must be different as pg42 covers drilling the gear sprockets. I am sure I have seen dimensions for the stub axle & steering arms etc, maybe I have seen it on the forum somewhere.

I have found some eye bolts with a 20mm thread and thin nuts for hanging farm gates which should be just the job for the 'king pins' just need conformation from Richard on the axle tube size.

That looks like the problem, my manual goes from page 68 to 70! ???

Looks like I will have to 'wing it'

Hi, send me a mail on the toylander address and I'll send the page but all axle tubes are 1" the length of the front ones are 112mm overall and 76 from the washer to the outer end.
The axle ends need to suit the king pin size usually 20mm. The same size as the studs that are put through houses to keep the ends walls together and the joiners are ideal ends in fact one joiner with cut into two ends. We have them cnc'd but I have seen a joiner nut used.
Best wishes
Richard

Richard,
This is a great idea - I followed the manual and welded 2 M20 nuts onto a short 1" tube but then had to borrow an M20 tap to clean out the threads (you later told me you actually remove the threads from the top nut but I thought that would put too much strain on the bottom one).
Would you consider updating the manual to show this idea? They cost a fortune from RS but I have found some on ebay for £3.95 each and it would be worth it - one of my axles has a slight negative camber, the other is vertical but they might have been more accurate using these nuts.
Having said that, I might just buy your front axle for my next one, which would be even easier!!
