Arrived today
« on: 17 March, 2011, 04:54:37 PM »
As many of you seem to do, I've been lurking around here for twelve months reading posts and waiting for my little lad to get a bit older.

However, giving myself plenty of time, I bit the bullet and bought a T2 kit from Richard on Tuesday, which arrived today (thanks Richard, great service).  The aim is to get it built for my son as a Christmas present, which gives me plenty of time to cogitate on all matters Toylander.

My thoughts on modifications (nothing major, just a few bits)to the standard build are so far are :

Using tunnel mounted e-gate for forward and reverse (using a full sized landy red or yellow knob as a stick top. I'll add a 'for show' stick for the other coloured knob unless I can think of anything else to use it for.

Cut down full size landy indicator mechanism and stalk for indicators (have one from my old SIIa Lightweight)

Scale LR badges from Gavin? on this site, as they look wonderful

Mud flaps, riffles? routed door handles and fuel filler.

RC model sound effect generator for engine sound (has start up noise and adjustable tick over - can also be linked to the speed controller to be propotionate to speed).

One of my main head scratchers is the colour.  Not sure whether to go for a classic SII colour or Beluga black to match my 90.

Anyway, just wanted to say Hi and heres a few photos for anyone wondering what they'll get for their 'investment'.

Doesn't look much against the 1:1 scale model

:) Happy building. As for the scale bades from Gavin they are fantastic and just finish the Toylander off nicely. Colourwise go for what you think is right for you, we brush painted in a DIY close green match and are happy with the overall look.

The sound effect generator is a good idea. I've been looking for one myself, but not having any luck finding one that makes an engine noise. Anyone know where to find one?

There are quite a few options for the sound generator, ranging from Tamiyas hi-end truck unit which can control lights and a multitude of sounds, but retails for about £350!!

I was thinking more on the lines of this, which is design for small diesel boats and you can adjust tick over and the revs rise with the motor input:

hope it helps,

Oh and I'm airing towards black for the toylander to match my 90 (which now is bejeweled with a toyland badge!)

Thanks for the off forum info Steve, we took a deep breath and let the moths out for a quick flutter and one of the sound bit thingys is winging its way to us as we speak.  Will let you know the outcome.

Well, after nine months, lots of disruption at home, plus a new full size Landy, the Toylander is back on the bench again.

I took the 'build it up, then break it down' approach, as I would with a model plane, so that I can be sure that all the holes are in the right places and the bits fit before I paint it.

After a lot of procrastination on the colour, I've decided to go with the colour of my Series III, which although not an original colour, looks period.

Here, if I can remember how to post them, are some photos of the build to date:

Looks really good,

I noticed with the bonnet up you have a strip of MDF between the back of hinge for the bonnet and the bulkhead, I have not got to this stage yet and was wondering if I too need to cut out this strip of wood? or was this a modification?

Thank you guys.

Venk,  the extra strip of mdf, is a bit of a mod by me, as I liked the way that it brought the bonnet a little further forward so that it hangs over the front panel a bit, making it look a bit more scale-like.  I have rebated the hinges a little, so that there is very little gap between extra panel on the bulkhead and it all fits well.  The piece is an exact copy of the rear bonnet fillet, so can be replicated very easily.

I think that there is a note in the build manual stating that if the bonnet overhangs the edge should be covered, so that no one can hurt themselves.

Hope this helps,

Steve

After pushing Henry up and down the lane a few times to test the T2's roadworthyness, I've now managed to strip it back down, take it to the local paintshop for it's clothes.

It's now sat in the garage while the paint hardens off :
