Project 1:2 scale (classic) "Mini Cooper"
« on: 13 February, 2011, 04:58:36 PM »
Hi all,

I'm Ron from the Netherlands and I just started my build. I'm building the car for myself ...eeeehh.... I mean my two daughters which are 9 months old and 3 year old  ;). My 3 year old really fancy's all Mini Coopers (new or old model) Every time she see one driving by, she's shouting "Cooper! dad I see a Cooper!"  ;D

So what should have become a standard TL2 (bought the plans in 2009), soon was changed for a full custom designed classic mini cooper convertible. I't looks quite good in my drawings (I think) just hope the real ons comes out just as good!

I've build a frame using 20mm steel box section, with swinging front axle. The Mini tub will be made mainly from 12mm MR MDF. I'm giong to use a 24V scooter axle and probably a 4QD electronic speed control. As for the wheels I use go-kart wheels (5") which are a perfect 1:2 scale for my build.

First sheet of MDF is on order, as soon as I made the main sections I can start on the steering mock-up.
The pictures aren't that good, but my wife had the camera with here so I had nothing better then my phone.

Rear of frame with scooter motor/axle

Front of frame with swing axle

Complete build so far

Hi Luc,

I live in Drunen, Noord Brabant. It's about 60km behind Breda (from Belgium) just before 's-Hertogenbosch.

Same here! Don't know when I finish te car but else I could come without the car and have a look/chat  ;) But depends on the date etc.

To get back on-topic, I have some computer rendering from the mini (see my avatar). I will post them tonight to give you guys an idea of what the car will look like when it's finished (or suposed te look like  ::) ).

Small update, some 3D renders. Still need te work out the steering, dash and some other small details. But I don't think I will design them by computer, just "on the fly" as the build evolves. Waiting on parts to arrive, so next update could take a while

Found and ordered some very nice scale looking front indicator lights. Lenses are round 30mm and can be fitted with standard "push-in" bulbs/leds.

Hi Andy,

I don't have a website for you, I bought them from a guy on a dutch auction site. But they are side indicator lights from a Fiat Seicento. So maybe you can find some locally

small update:
Got my headlights and some other small bits in the mail today (thanks Richard, they look great!)

Also got my first plate of MR MDF, they had to special order it so it took a week. Hopefully I can get some parts for the tub sawn this weekend. And need to get some battens and suiteble screws to test fit the tub.

I've cut the first panels and have dry fitted them loose just to have a look. Also bought material for the battens abd a box of screws. So first pictures with panels fitted probably later this week!!  ;D

Hi,

Sorry for the lack of update and info, project was put on "hold" since my wife suffered a "Burn-out/depression" and was in a clinic for several months. Had to take care for our two ( 3years old and a 1 year old) kids alone  :-\ But all fine now!

Last weekend I blew of the dust to see at what stage I was, will try to pick up the project soon!

Hi Ron
Sorry to hear you've had illness in the family. Sounds like a bit of a traumatic time. Hope all is well now and will continue to improve.
Best of luck with the project when you get chance to make any progress.
Best Wishes
Walter
