So this is what I did: ( perhaps it will help someone else in the future)

I drew out the shape on a scrap piece of plywood

I used a 15 mm forstner bit at each corner, and then cut with a jig saw close to the drawn lines

Then resorting to a hand file ( another tool I am not particularly good with) was able to smooth out the contours and used some course grit sand paper to get to the lines.

I needed some wood filler to fill defects made by jigsaw and the template (door handle hole) is seen in place on the side panel, ready for routing tomorrow.

i plan to use the same template on the left side panel, but will mark the location of the door line on the back of the panel and rout from the back or inside of the left panel

Tomorrow I will try post update with images of side panels with door handles cut out (if successful)

Eventually got around to routing out the door handles:

Used the templates and a guide busing which had an offset of 2mm, then used a template routing bit to copy my templates on the final side panels.

I am sure there are other ways to do it, just sharing my method.
