Door handle dimensions
« on: 06 February, 2011, 09:48:23 PM »
Hello,

I wonder could anyone point me in the direction of plans/dimensions for the door handle modification? I am sure I have seen them on here before but cannot seem to locate them now I am ready to do them!

Kind Regards

Gavin

Thanks Anthony,

I'd seen Thierry's PDF instructions but I can't see any dimensions for the door handles.  Does anyone have a guide (or Thierry's contact details so that I can ask him)?  I suppose I will be able to guesstimate from the pictures but I really want to get them spot on.

Any help appreciated.

Many thanks,

Gavin

Gavin

I thought there were some door handle drawings there but I see they are only for the fuel filler.

I will contact Richard and see if he has any of the door handle.

Hi Anthony and Richard,

Got the drawings and dimensions you posted on the website for the handle.  Just what I was looking for.

Many thanks,

Gavin

Hi Gavin.

I did a fake door handle, not cutting through the wood. Less work than the original plan, but (so I hope) would look just as good when it is finished.

Hi Christian,

They look great.  I am using MDF so I am not sure I could get the required depth and still leave enough material for the back without it being so thin you can poke your finger through it?  I think I'll have to cut right through then put a backing panel on the inside.  Looks like a good solution for the ply though.

Cheers,

Gav

Hi Gav

It is actually not that deep. Maybe 4mm. So that still leaves 8mm. The "handle" is glued on and a bit thicker.

btw. I bought a grinder (great tool!) Well worth the spend.

In that case I might give that a try on a spare piece to see how it works out in MDF.  It would get round having to have a "patch" on the inside of the door.

Cheers Gav

(PS. I take it you didn't do the door handle with the grinder  ;) ?!?!)

I meant to say: Router! Not grinder!

:D I thought you'd have to be very skilled with the grinder to be able to cut those door handles!!!  I haven't yet tried them myself but have made a template for the router so I may do them this weekend.  I haven't been able to do much this week as I have been tiling my mum and dad's kitchen which has taken all my spare time but should get going again tonight.

???  I was searching the forum for options for the door handle, cos I am not sure I know how to bend metal.
Christian how did this option work for you? once it was painted could you tell any difference?

For those builders who used a router, can I ask a basic question about creating the template:

The shape that needs to be cut out, can be made into a template, this has to be reduced in size by 1/2 the diameter of the bushing plus 1/2 the diameter of the straight but being used.  So if you create a smaller template will the rounded corners need to be worked by hand to get the correct dimensions?

Sorry not an engineer, without step-by step instructions, I am struggling to conceptualize//Venk

Well i tried to create a solid template to rout around to create the hole for the door handle ( as I am not good with my jig saw) and i encountered problems with my router.  My guide bushing was 30 mm diamter, with a 6 mm stright bit, this meant that with the offsets, my template proved to be very small and just too difficult for me to cut around with a router
