Dodge G507 6 wheel truck 1:2 scale
« on: 17 January, 2011, 07:46:49 AM »
Hi fellow builders,

our Geepstar is becoming mechanical ready , once it is on its wheels we can do the minor stuff (painting,electrical..) in stage , depending on the weather...

just saying that once it roll's out the shop we can start building our next model , Cad plan's are good as ready (need some corrections left and right) but most important , the axles, motor and wheels are already there (usually the most difficult things to find on an not so common build..)

the idea is to build this ...(1:2 scale)

and here some pictures of the drivetrain (2x400w 24v )and wheels (40cm diameter)

Cheers,

Luc

Hi Luc
Looks like that would be a super model. I had some thoughts about a 6 wheeler myself, but am concerned about keeping the 4 drive wheels on the ground. How do you propose to do that. Will it have fixed front and rear swing axles, or suspension? Look forward to seeing progress
Best wishes
Walter

Hi Walter,

the two axles will be mounted on a sturdy frame, with a hinge point inbetween the axels where the frame will be mounted , on each corner comes a small gasspring (4 in total) so the whole drivertrain will act as a kind a bogie setup , the fact that i'm using two motors will reduce the 'free spin'

i don't have the Cad's at hand here but this is the idea in a very simplified way .

if you look close you can see it in this picture

cheers ,

Luc

Hi Christian,

I got these axles from a dutch friend who used to work in a wheelchair-repair shop... these motors are rated at 400W/24V ,1 axle i used in my first  jeep and certainly performs outstanding, my first jeep was made of 18mm plywood (so very heavy tub) and even with two adults it still pulls uphill.

as for the truck, this weekend i dug up my welding skills and assembled the frame for the drivetrain.

all CAD design seem to work out well, now i'm in the stage of designing the ladder frame (wood) and the steering assembly (steel)

Hi Luc.

I am building a TL1 right now, but using a MKS drive with a bosch motor 245W (2 of those set ups) as in the picture.
How are you planning to control your 800 W?

Cheers Christian

Hi Christian ,

I hav a friend who frequently brings in thrown away stuff (electrical/mechanical) from a large factory

sometimes he brings DC servo controllers, I have two in stock now, rated at 48V (works on 24V as well) and 80A , one is used in my other jeep the second i'm planning to use in my truck
there controlled by a pot meter (fw/rev) and have some other things ( free spin, forced decelaration etc)

(the big black box on the panel)

The Geepstar is of the bench and stands on its own wheels , decided to pull in the truck drivetrain , puch it onto the mini scissor lift and press 'ascend'

spend a few hours then in the shop to cut and weld the ladder frame, initially designed to be done in wood but out of cost/time perspective i changed it to steel

a view while doing a 'size mok up '

the drivetrain and ladder frame .. also to see is the fake steering wheel , just to give an idea off the size.

Regards,
Luc

Project is moving in high gear(thanks to the excellent weather today)

Fitting the batteries, there a bit to high but later i will add covers (case-style)

Bolting the body to the frame

filling,Sanding and painting (first coat) can start

Son and daughter lending a hand.

The dashboard.

Today's progress.

Tomorrow , as more excellent weather is forecasted I will wire up the motors and batteries again , will be a lot easier  to move it around the.

the is a movie available too (frame stress-testing)

Good idea about getting dimensions from a scale model.
Great project and a nice film!
It gives me new inspiration now my project is almost finished.  :-\

Keep inventing!

that is an incredible achievement and the transaxel works brilliantly as well as the articulating front axel  ;)
;) very good job know that has got me thinking on what to build next?
hmmmmm any ideas :D
