Using a scooter wig wag control
« on: 09 January, 2011, 01:27:56 PM »
Hi everyone

Now that my Toylander 2 has had a month or two of use at the hands of my grandsons and has covered quite a few miles I think it's safe to say that my method of fixing the donor mobility scooter's wig wag control to the car has been a success. For anyone who doesn't know what a wig wag is ( I didn't know it was called that until I read this forum) it is the handlebar mounted and pivoted forward and reverse controller which is squeezed by either the left or right hand to select  forward or reverse gear and move the scooter. The beauty of this controller is that it offers a gradual speed increase the further it is moved. I had a few goes at designing a way to fit it which would work simply in the car.
My final design ( see photos) looks a bit Heath Robinson but actually works amazingly well. Don't be confused by the cuts and marks in the piece of wood I used, it was just a waste offcut and I couldn't be bothered to re-make it with a nice piece.
A gear lever acts via a bike brake cable on a rotating piece of plywood with a lever protruding from it, This lever is moved either left or right and presses on either the forward or reverse arm of the wig wag which is attached low down on the front bulkhead. The  plywood board has a raised accelerator pedal on it which protrudes through an aluminium false piece of floor. I am making it sound more complicated than it actually is! The photos are easier to take in.
The final top speed is governed by a rotary dial on the dashboard which at the hands of my grandsons is always set to maximum!

Sorry I'm doing this in stages but it won't let me put all the photos on at once.
This picture shows the control with the aluminium cover over it.

This shows the finished result with car mats fitted to disguise the sloped part of the floor. You can also make out the rotary speed control on the dash

All the best

Hi Philip,

I'm just at the "trying to understand it all stage" at the moment whilst I wait for the plans to be delivered and make a start. I think you have a brilliant solution to using the wig wag "as is" and thank you for posting the pictures explaining it all. I intend to go the mobility scooter donor route and have been pondering ways to implement the wig wag idea. Does the "gear lever" have a gate or just rely on friction?

Your Toylander looks well finished with ali cappings, upholstery and mats and I especially like the rubber safety trim around the windscreen frame edges. I do hope you post some more pictures of your build.

Regards,
Dennis

Hi Dennis

The gear lever has a spring which wants to push it  to the side. I made a simple gate with a notch at the front and one at the rear of it's travel for it to locate in aided by the spring.
