My new project
« on: 21 October, 2010, 08:00:30 PM »
Hi all
Im new here and this is my first post.
I am now the proud owner of a Toylander 2. I have a kit of parts/precut MDF panels that was purchased by my wife for me to build, by help from richard, Thanks Richard. I believe Ive got enough parts of the kit to create a rolling body.

The project is meant to be for my two boys who are 2 and 4yrs old but we all know its mine and the boys can use it sometimes ;)

I have currently spent about 7ish hours on it, the main bulkheads/inner wings and floor are all together and I have just fitted the left hand side, side panel tonight. I cant wait to get it finished.

I'll try and upload a photo of the latest stage of the build soon.

:) Hello and welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy your build any questions please ask there is a wealth of information here from all types of building abilities.  ;) We agree  make sure you do a thorough test drive before allowing children to drive. Several years should see a really good test drive time.

Hi all
As promised some photos of my TL2's progress, Ive almost created a complete tub. Im quite chuffed with it, its the biggest bit of carpentry Ive done in a long time.

The bonnet and wing tops are just placed on for the photo at the moment, I'm planning on fixing the wing tops and making up the dash tonight.

Regards

Happy building

;) Moggies were a passion of ours long before Toylanders come into our lives.  Mrs Paul did well to spot that one before me, all those hours of  scraping off old underseal on the underside of Moggies must have paid off for her.  Ah I remember romantic weekends in the crisp fresh air just the 2 of us no thoughts of children, just a scraper a cushion and a pair of overalls and a 2 door saloon undergoing restoration.  How cold was that garage in winter it doesnt even bear thinking about. Life through rose tinted glasses.

Then this week the oldest passes his driving test, how time flies.

:)  Sorry Brian he took it in his driving instructors Peugeot.  Sons current mode of transport is bicycle or 50 odd year old Fordson Major tractor.  Needs to save for the insurance for the car, buying it will be the marginally cheaper bit.

Latest progress on my TL2

Body capping are on now since the photos where taken.

Ive still got to repaint my seating, and paint the chassis under the tailgate.
Ive got to wire up and screw down the throttle box and after a bit of wire tidying I should be ready for a test drive.

My boys really enjoy driving the TL2 but I find that they always keep lifting up the bonnet and pretend to fix the engine which isnt there, its just the normal fragile electronics and electrics/fuse boxes etc. I know you can fit a bonnet catch to fasten it down and Ive actually got the kit, but Ive never fitted it. So I had the idea of putting in a fake engine for them to fix. Not sure if its been done before, and Im sure Im probably not the first to do it but heres my attempt at making a dummy engine.

Its basically a sheet of MDF shaped to fit the underbonnet furniture like headlights, steering column and wiring loom to the dash, and I made the black part of the engine from two bits of off cut skirting board. The only reason Ive only used two spark plugs is because its all I had on the shelf as spares, I might go to four in the future. Ive added some self tapping screws to act as dummy head bolts. The rocker cover is actually a genuine Austin J40 rocker that I bought off Ebay.

The Battery isolator switch is going to be the main switch to turn the battery off when its not in use, which will be an improvement on my current arrangement which is undoing a M6 bolt terminal directly on the battery.

For ease of removal for my purposes, ive put two threaded studs in the back as per richards plans which I intend to insert into two drilled blind holes in the bulkhead. For the forward end Im going to get hold of a Keyed Cam lock which will lock over a piece of Aluminium angle off cut which I had from the body cappings

Cheers

Steve
