Reprogramming a Scooter Controller
« on: 19 April, 2010, 02:52:10 PM »
Hello, I've been thinking again.  ???
Has anybody tried to re programme a controller?
The one donated from my scooter is a Curtis 1228. A quick google found this PDF (link downloads a PDF)
http://curtisinstruments.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=cProducts.DownloadPDF&file=1228revB%2Epdf
It would appear that with the correct software you can change the throttle pot settings, speed ramps, braking and a whole host of other things which could be useful. It may overcome some of the problems experienced with adapting the wig wag controllers by replacing them with another style of Potentiometer and using a switch to select reverse.
I've found the software just need to sort a cable out. Oh and build the TL first.  ;D
Regards,
Mike.

Hi,
I have reprogramed the controller with a PC and a home made cable no problems, BUT it depends on the model which things can be changed !

Cheers Andy

I am building my 3 year old daughter Harriet a Toylander, I have sourced some old mobility items classed as un economical  to repair, I have built the body and fitted and butchered all electrics batteries and motor together. Problem I now have due to fitting bigger wheel and tyre combination I now have to reprogram to increase speed and/or torque. Now I am totally stumped....All seems fine on flat just loose power on slopes or driving over garage door frame. I believe I can make a lead and download software for my needs, any help much appreciated.

Hi,
I have replied here rather to your PM in case it helps anyone else.
I haven't programmed my controller yet. I am still busy albeit slowly with other stuff.
You may be able to identify your controller here,
http://www.curtisinstruments.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=cDatasheets.dspListDS&CatID=1&siteID=2
The data sheet should give you an idea what you can do with it.
As for the lead, have a read of this thread on another forum.
http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/electric-golf-carts/15316-programming-curtis-controller-8.html
There is a lot of info and although its about golf karts it is relevent because they also use a curtis motor controller. There are instructions to make the lead up but read the whole thread because from memory the first version was wrong. In amongst it is a reference to a software download link. (post #53)
I hope this helps.
Mike.

Jumpy,
Out of interest which scooter did you use, have you got a picture of the motor and axle?
It may be useful to start a list of which ones have the guts for direct drive and which ones don't for future reference? I know others on here have had no problems when using larger wheels but some have struggled like you.

Thanks Mike,

I used a mix n match of scooter parts, I came across about 6 knackered ones and took any bits I wanted. So the controller I am using is the one with the least wires!! motor is the newest looking one from a different scooter, the speed seems pretty good with the wheels I have bought so probably a bit of a tweak with program.

Cheers Paul
