Hello
« on: 16 December, 2008, 09:26:28 PM »
Hello, Its good to finally have a toylander OC. I built my toylander 2 about 18 months ago, it took about 6 months and it was avery enjoyable project. I used 2 250 W electric scooter motors and reduced the speed using a intermediate shaft. To this I attached a drum brake. Its very similar to the setup on the gocart in here:
http://buggies.builtforfun.co.uk/Racer/WalkThrough/index.html.

I finally completed it and took a couple of videos. The only real problem is the size of the thing. Getting it inthe car means that I can only take one "driver" in the passenger seat and both boys love to drive it.

I have done indicators,lights etc.

Hi there,
Welcome to the club!  We are quite a friendly bunch and will swap ideas and stories with you.
I have seen your video clips on Youtube before. I like your little car, it looks quite nippy.
If you have any more information, pictures, etc please post them on here for everyone to see, it's always nice to see how others have solved problems.

Like you, I'd finished mine (April this year), before the forum was up and running, but I have recently started a 'Re-fit', to complete some projects on the car, and to modify other parts which were either rushed, or I wasn't happy with.
Mine's the Red Series 2 in the gallery, and there's a link to my build website in my profile.

Welcome aboard,
Regards,
Mark

Hi
Looks good, and a good site for information, thanks for that.
I also expect transport to be a problem when mine is finished, nearly there now, blue one on the gallery. I have an old trailer, but will need new tyres and lights. Then I'll need a towbar......looks like the next project.
Car looks really good, looks powerful on video too.
best wishes

Thanks for the welcome. I have found that the nippiness can be a problem, it does about 8 mph, and could do serious damage to the toylander and some poor unsuspecting bystander. So I fitted a parental remote control that either slows it to half speed or cuts the power altogether. Unfortunately it does not apply the brake, but it has reduced the number of scrapes considerably.

Legally , I think, under 14s driving these in a public place is quite dodgy. My house insurance covers thrid party liability for accidents outside the home, but with a 5 year old at the wheel , I am not sure where I would stand. Has anyone else looked into this?

Hi Pete, (is that right)
I have a sollution to the people getting in the way, fit a loud horn!!
 :D :D :D ;)

Seriously, it's something I'd not considered, but I agree, we should all look into it.

I don't have that problem at the moment, as my Grandson only drives it in the garden at present, he leaves it to me to taxi him around the street, sitting in the back waving at every-one, little poser!

My car insurance is Fully Comp, but I'd like to see the Insurers face if I claimed for injury with the toylander! ;) :D :D

Regards,
Mark.

Hi stan
I bought the wheels, complete with tyres, straight from Toylander. They are 8 inch wheels which makes them about 15.5 inches diameter overall including tyres. This is obviously what the model is designed for, so will give you an idea what to aim for. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I think that the ones you have will look too small. I have a set that size from my invalid buggy donar vehicle, and they don't suit at all.
Best wishes

Hi Stanley,
For me, the choice of wheels is largely dependant on the type of drive system you're going to use.
It sounds like you might have bought a set of Motobility Scooter wheels, (are they Pneumatic tyres and Alloy rims?) if so, these may be too small for the job.

Most of us have either bought 16" diameter wheels from Richard, or sourced them from elsewhere (Ebay), but I don't think that anyone has gone smaller than 6" rims.
Quadra (Mike) has used quad bike wheels, and Gremlin (Patrick) has used wheels from a lawn tractor (I think), these are the smallest ones I can recall.

I used trailer Rims and Hubs, again sourced via Ebay, but I have the luxury of friends in engineering who have made specialised parts for me F.O.C.

I would suggest you start a 'New Topic' in the 'Toylander 2' Forum on this subject (wheels), and outline the ideas you have for your built. Members will then post answers and suggestions for you to consider.

Keep Busy,
Regards,
Mark.
