Hi from London
« on: 02 August, 2010, 07:27:41 PM »
Hi guys

I've been lurking on here for a while, reading posts gleening info on dimensions for 4x4 replicas. So I thought I should make my self known and start asking some questions!

I've already built one little car for my eldest, a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang look alike:-

Some videos here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YCB4VQUDbM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoHv3qb0M1o&feature=related

Its based on a very old mobility scooter rear axle and stub axles.
Gearing changed - it was far too fast until I did this!
I have also installed a remote (radio controlled) cut off.
Chassis is 1"x3/4" steel tube (almost a ladder chassis)
Grille is rolled and souldered brass
Bonnet is Titanium(!) sheet - cos thats what was lying around at the time
Rear 'boat section' is 4mm ply with oak veneer
Walnut Dash board
Real Leater upholstery

At the moment I am building Lotus 7 replica for my next daughter (well, I've spent an evening on it, but think I need to build a proper nose cone):

I am also gathering parts for a Toylander Series 1, as its alot more versitile than my current cars - older children can drive them too.

I have also built myself a car; an electric Fiat Cinquecento, just to see if I could. Needs new batteries, though.

Any questions about my vehicles, please feel free to ask, or come and have a look - as I'll be bugging you lot about your builds!

Best regards

Christopher

Hi Christopher
Wow!
Several fine builds there! All look to be supr quality jobs.
Well done and keep us posted.
What are the legal problems with  the electric conversion on the Fiat?

Hi Walter

Thanks for the kind words...the Lotus 7 is on the back burner - today I just ordered plans for a Series 1, flat panels are easier than fibreglass nose cones! I'll use the running gear form the Lotus in the Series 1.

The Fiat was pretty simple to get through the DVLA. All I had to do was trailer it to my local DVLA office for them to inspect. The inspection consisted of looking at it to see if its electric, nothing else, didn't even take it off the trailer. They gave me a new tax disc there and then, and took the V5 to be changed.
Prior to the DVLA inspection I had it MOT'd, which it passed, with zero emmissions  ;D

However, when trying to find out how to go about the legal change, I was told 7 different ways by 7 different DVLA staff, including taking it to VOSA, and another saying not to bother changing the V5 as its not important.

If you're interested, a great website is www.evalbum.com, there are loads of other modified cars and bikes on there...I'm also a memeber of the BatteryVehicleSociety....

I'll try to post a log/blog of my Series 1 build.

Hello Christopher, looking at those superb model cars you have made, I don't think you will require much help from many of us on here. :D

If you do find a problem with your T1 build, just post it up and we will attempt to give you a solution.

Keep us posted on your progress, the more photo's the better.

I have built two full size roadgoing kitcars for my son and Daughter in the past, a Quantum 2+2 and a GTM Spyder.

Regards,

Brian.
