accelerator pedal

hello again anyone got any ideas on what to use for a make and brake switch for the accelerator pedal i was using an old type mcb which i adapted so it was just working like a plunge switch although it was rated at 50 amps this was not enough as after about 3 solid hours use it burnt out rendering the Xmas present just a push along landy( not good )i am using a direct drive 24v system with a mobility motor but none of the control gear just switching through the afore mentioned pedal i have noticed toylander do do a plunge switch but not sure of its rating .there is always the contactor option but wondered if anyone had a simple soloution for this problem as i am getting tired of pushing tom round now any advice much appreciated

Hi Nick,

If there's a 'Maplin' Electronics store in your area (www.maplin.co.uk), they sell a vast range of push to make switches, for just a couple of pounds.

I used a simple 'Heavy Duty' P.T.M. switch for Harvey's landy, and it's never given any trouble (touch wood).

I set this 'In-line' in the power feed for the wig-wag (scooter go button), which I converted into the gear lever.

Mark, I'm guessing by reading the two comments you do different things with your switches, it sounds like you use yours on the controll side of a speed controller whereas it sounds to me as Nick is switching the full load of the motor with his switch. The startup current of a 24VDC motor (especially at stall current ie. starting uphill) I'm guessing would be quite high. I don't know what rating the RLT ones are but at least you they will be up for the job. Someone out there in toylander land must have a direct switched motor with a ammeter inline that could tell us the starting currents.

You are correct Tufty, the load is too great for any switch that I know of when used at 24 volts. Richard

yes mate i am using the switch directly not in the control circuit which is my problem as as you said the amps are pretty high just hopin someone out there has a simple soloution

help help still cant find a soloution for this looked at contactors and even solinoids but nothing surely someone has the answer please help

thanks gents but the prob seams to be high load current not sure how high again perhaps someone could help but i am guessing around 40amps as my motor is 180w  all relays contactors and switches seam to be low load unless there very expensive a get the way inwhich these work but still cant find one to suit thanks again for any help

Hi all

This may seem a bit stupid but as Brian says a 24V motor will pull 1/2 the current that a 12V motor of the same Wattage. Therefore I'd expect the 12v switch to be capable of switching a 24V motor. The only thing that would be worse would be the arcing of the switch contacts maybe this is what kills the switch?

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

PS. 24V starter motor soleniods will supply a lorry starter motor which will pull alot more current that a TL. You could hunt around for 1 (or 2 for reversing) of them?

all sorted now thanks guys 70a 24v relay from the site above push switch from wholesalers all done now just the fear of tom crashing or puting the landy in the ditch
