I have an old mobility scooter that is front wheel drive, I know the motor has plenty of power because the guy I got it from used to use it to park his caravan down the side of his house. My original plan was to use this and make the mayfair one wheel drive but I like the idea of the two motors to give that differential effect. Thats why I am watching your project with the drills.

I have been to Sandnes, the rig spent a bit of time in there about 8 years ago.

Oh dear - has it been over half a year since I last updated this thread?

The Mayfair project has been on halt as I have had possibly the busiest spring and summer ever.  Family sure takes time.  Oh, well.  Here is a short status update.

Most metal parts have been fabricated, got them back from powdercoating a few days ago and am very pleased with the result:

The body has gotten a layer of fiberglass cloth, and several layers of epoxy resin.  I've been waiting for summer temperatures to paint it, but summer seems to have come and gone without me noticing.  Bummer.

I hope to make some progress again this fall, and at least get the Mayfair running under it's own power.

Today, the Mayfair was assembled and the 4yo took it for a test drive.

Short story: total failure.  The drill motors will power the Mayfair fine, but when stopping...  The high gear ratio of the drill gearbox makes it impossible to turn the motor by turning the output shaft.  Thus, when the motor stops, so does the output shaft.  But the car still moves, and something has to give.  That something is the gearbox.

Proper motor is on order from Richard.

Just a quick update on the Mayfair.

I have gotten and installed the motor I ordered from Richard, and the 4yo has been test driving the Mayfair for 1-2 hours each day for a week now.  I must say I am impressed by the quality of this motor.  It is quiet and powerful, making the Mayfair a smooth ride.

Additionally, it is drawing far less current than the drill motor.  On a flat surface, less than 4A. Up the hill where the Toylander draws 70A at 24V, it draws less than 10A.  At 12V!

I use a 4S 5Ah LiPo battery to power it.  It's only 150x50x35mm and weights under 600g.  Gives over an hour of play time, including going repeatedly up and down a steep hill.

Basically, if you are looking for a motor for your Toylander, Mayfair etc, do yourself a favor and consider the motors from RLT.  They are worth every penny.
