The use of relays.
« on: 17 October, 2009, 11:17:33 PM »
I thought it might be useful to fellow builders who might be struggling with there motor wireing to give a little useful information on the use of relays.

You should be able to click on the circuit and it will open into a larger format.

regards,

Brian

I will post more circuits as I develop them in my drawing programme which by the way, is a Microsoft office freebie called "Visio". :o

This is not a brilliant programme and takes some getting used to, but it's all I've got. :(

In the drawing above, I have not shown the negative returns to the battery as black wire, but have attached an earth sign where the negative black wires would be if I had drawn them.  This is to save me haveing to draw all the negative returns.  In my next drawing, I will draw in the negative wires, let me know which version you prefer when I have posted it.

It's nearly done, but my wife complaina about the time I spend on here so I have to show willing and do some other chores as well. ::) ;D ;D ;D

Hi Brian
Thats interesting!!
Slightly different to the way I did it, but that has the added advantage, that if you put lever into centre off position you get a short onto the motor and thus some degree of dynamic braking. Excellent!

Hi,

Also different from the way I did it, I power a pair of relays to 'swap' the poles over, theory being the tractor will me mostly going fowards so I power the relays for reversing, the result, more relay life and more battery life (although the current draw of the relays is naff all really).

However goes to show there's more than one way to kill a cat.

Does your way not make it very difficult to push your land rover as the motor coils are shorted with the control circuit off?

Just put it into gear and push in the direction you have set.

The relays never switch any current except in an emergency, any switching of current is done by a master relay.

Here is a drawing of a circuit using a remote control unit to disable the motor of any model from upto a 100 mtrs. away.

This is an addendum to the above circuit which is incorrect and will not work as intended.

The modified drawing is shown below.
