Custom toylander 109"
« on: 06 January, 2011, 12:51:31 AM »
I've commenced building a Custom Toylander based on a SIII 109"

I'm building it on a 40x40mm RHS chassis based on the dimensions of a real landy chassis.

the body I have taken measurements on a 50% scale Google Sketch image of a SIII 109"

I'll tweak all the measurements for rounding / eye them up to make it more practical. So far I have the chassis steel cut, laid out and marked up.

I'll get some MDF on the weekend and start making some body panel templates in 5mm MDF for a test fit to see how it works practically before commiting to 12 or 18mm MDF for the fimal body. if the 5mm body works out ok, i'll also then weld up the chassis.

well. I picked up 2 sheets of 18,12 and 6mm MDF.

I screwed the 2 x 18mm together to make a big 'bench' on my home made wooden saw horses and the MDF was still a bit saggy, so some trusty 65mm Gal steel made it sit nice and flat, but the bench is getting a tad on the tall side. ah well.

I made a jig up from some left over timber, measure, scribe, measure, drill, screw, measure and got all the chassis lined up and square.

A few tack welds here and there and it was time to weld it up. I was quite impressed with my welds (normally looks like a flock of cocky's have made a mess, but that's an aussie saying I guess).

Its all ground back, welds painted in Cold Gal for now to stop any rust.

I ordered and paid for the toylander plans, which i'll use to help mock up the front end and side panels and use as a guide for the rear tub.
Hopefully these should be here in a few weeks.

The New Circular saw arrived so i can start working on the template panels. i think the progress to get the panels todagether will be fast, stalling when its time for the harder stuff like steering, electonrics etc. we'll see how we go.

I'll have to get some photos of the finished chassis.

No worries mate. All good. I should have filled out the Signiture earlier :)

Very hot and humid at present with all the rains we are getting makes it hot work in the shed. Just awaiting the plans to arrive to start mocking up some panel work :)

Are you being troubled by the floods Steve?

Looks devastating on TV, feel so sorry for people out there.

Kind regards,

No personally, I'm about 50 metres above our local river, which flooded, but not as bad as it was a few years back.

The worst floods are in Queensland, Which is about the same distance from my house as it would be by driving from London To Rome. Its scary when you read about areas the size of the UK is flooded in Australia.

They'll all bounce back though..

Plans arrived :) off to get the 20x30mm timber and start making out and cutting out the body panels. I think i'll do some templates in 5mm then cut the 12mm from that.

Completed Chassis:
Have you done much more to the chassis yet ?
I'm really interested in how it goes as I'm thinking of building something similar,  but pedal powered rather than motorised.  Is there any way you'd be willing to estimate the weight difference between the metal chassis compared to a wooden one of similar strength ?  Obviously this will be an important factor for me seeing as I'll be going the non motorised route.

PS - How long is that chassis ?  I'm wondering if a 109 based Toylander will fit in the back of a Volvo estate.

Hi,

according to my CAD system, my steel chassis has a weight of 20,7 kg without wheels, axles etc.)
There is no weight saving on the wood in my design.
