Project number 1 - Toylander 2
« on: 22 September, 2009, 12:28:45 PM »
Morning all,

I initially started my thread under the heading Lightweight Landrover. However as the plans are not ready and I wanted to get cracking I decided to make the standard Toylander 2 build therefore a new thread was required.

Right then, I'm well underway!!! The tub is mock built and ready for steering, bonnet and windscreen which I have. I visited Richard yesterday and bought my parts, What a helpful and nice bloke!! I'm now inspired for project 2,3,4,5,6 etc ha ha seriously a tractor will be the next build. Richard let me have a go round his garden on his and even at 26 I WANT ONE!! but when he gets his other creations into production I hope to be one of the first to have one.

Well you may have seen a post of mine on Quadra's thread but if not I have some quad wheels as i wanted a chunky look but couldn't go with Richard's as the diameter is too big for my mobility scooter motor. I'm not gearing it down as the scooter has a lot of power, it was designed so it could climb up kurbs, I have witnessed this so an extra 2 inch shouldn't make any difference, it may be a little slow until it gets moving but we'll see.

Oh and my scale badges have just arrived from gavin and they are FANTASTIC!!!!

Right well I will crack on and see what else I can get done today!!!

Morning,

Well I think that its time for an update on my build. I have build the windscreen and attached the swing axle. I have given my Grandad a mission to make some running shafts for the front wheels as the ones that I bought with the hubs and wheels are at a camber, this is no good for the Toylander. The hubs are fine with some new shafts and a slight alteration to the axle stubs the steering will work fine. Once this is complete I will be able to determine the width of the rear axle (using one from the mobility scooter, looks realistic like a Landrover's diff) as using the quad hubs and the axle will need extending to match the front (Mission 2 for my Grandad).

Well thats all for no I will post some pictures when I work out how.

The scooter motor, diff and batteries came from

I have modified the image links; you need to use the IMG code from the dropdown below the image. I hope I have attched the correct ones.

Hi Adam,
I have to agree with David, building in a nice warm house is considered cheating (spelt Common Sense), amongst the 'Die-Hard' builders!!' :D :D

Looks like your front hubs came from a Quad. I have some similar ones from a Suzuki LT 50, and I understand what you mean by the complexity of the setup. The plus side to this would be, that the Toylander would have Castor, Camber and Ackerman geometry built into the steering system, so the wheels would self center.

Looking good so far,
Keep Busy,
Regards,
Mark.

Morning,

Thankyou for your comments and Thanks Anthony for sorting my pics out (you did pick the right ones) I will try to get it right next time  ;D ;D
I would be doing the build in the garage if I had one but all i have is a cellar, I did most of the cutting there but the T2 wont fit up the stairs so was forced to build it in the front room!!!

The wheels are from a mini moto sized quad, only keeping the brass coloured hub from the front axle the rest is being remade.

This was taken before building the T2 up, was just to show the size of the wheels.

Well the axle shafts have been made see pics below. So after this weekend (would love to get stuck in and crack on but Tog Gear Live is calling  ;D) I will put them in place and begin to sort the rear drive axle out (needs extending but don't know size until front is in place).

Old and new

New with hub

Will post picture of shaft in place once done.

Bye for now,

Morning all,

Well time for a progress report I think. Well the front axle is sorted with steering and wheels fitted and set up.
Standard swing axle used cut down the tube where the hubs fit and added the shafts that I had made to accomadate the mini moto quad wheels i'm using.

The rear axle has been sorted, holes cut for it to fit to the underside of the tub. I have had the spacers made and the hubs bored out, just need these two welding together, placing on the axle and a hole drilled through the lot where a sellock pin will be inserted to provide the dive. I've attached a couple of pics to show my progress.

Morning all,

Thnaks for the comments Mike, I stole the wheel idea from you ha ha  :P has taken some thinking and planning but its all coming together now. Well time for an update.....

I had the TL2 moving the otherday however under full power the system cut out, a week or so of testing and trying to solve this my dad has managed to work the issue (we think its a faulty micro switch on the parking brake for the scooter) a slight modification to the wiring and a rebuilt parking brake and its working now.

I have a few pics of the beast with all wheels on and the right way up.

its a shame i don't have the tub painted as would be great fun in this snow!!!! ;D

how rear axle is fastened to body tub

Inside the tub runs a threaded bar which goes through the supports on the axle, holes cut in base of tub to allow access for supports, this will eventually be bolted in place against the angle iron used to place further support.

Morning all,

Well its been a while since my last post. Got a fair bit done on my Toylander so now for some pic updates:

I decided to use the spare batton from building the body tub planed and glued and pinned in place to do the curves on the wings

This was then filled in with car body filler

This was then sanded and using fine filler (putty - the correct name escapes me at the moment) to create a smooth finish ready for painting.

Some tinkering pics:

As every Landrover ends up jacked up from time to time i thought it fitting the Toylander should follow suit!!

A couple of coats of paint (primer and undercoat) still trying to decide on the final colour some help deciding this would be great.
I have made a start on my dash and put some switches in place.

Thats all for now.

Thanks for the kind comments Mick!
I still need some help with the dreaded colour choice. I have started a poll please help me decide as I choose a colour and then change my mind so I am putting the colour in the hands of the voters!
Fingers crossed I get a better response than the general election!! ha ha ;D

;D Camoflague Pink just in case we ever get any more summers and you wish to disguise it in a heat haze
yellow and white are ok but collect flies and other flying horrors which may irrate the driver. Go for any landrover shade of green, blue or even silver just to be different.
