New boy!
« on: 28 May, 2010, 04:40:46 PM »
Hello all

Newbie here, joined today. Bought mayfair plans about 18 years ago for my first son and got no further, have now purchased another set for my two year old and hope to get further this time, love Lee's sketch showing the different back in my unskilled mind to look like brum. This looked so easy but now I have the plans I realise how may options there are.

1st silly question in Mdf OR ply?

Any help or comments welcome.

Lee

Welcome along!

I've put mine on hold for now as we're strapped for cash but the thing that really held me up was the fact I want a different rear end. The one in the thread below was my first thought but you can see the rear of the seat is quite a long way back, which makes it look a bit out of proportion. I've drawn up loads but still can't decide what will look good but still allow my little boy to fit in.

Anyway, I've got regular mdf for mine. Moisture resitant stuff would have been better but it's not as readily available. I think you need to put in more work on finishing with ply...

All the best,
Lee

Hello and welcome "Corrollaboyzz".

Do you think you could give us a proper name please, we all try and be polite on here, your avatar name's a bit of a mouthfull, and a Yorkshire "Eyup sithy" hardly looks right.:D

Any way, we are all ways pleased to meet and greet new members so welcome.

The easiest material to work with and give the best finnish, with a minimum amount of preparation, is MDF.  Plywood is probably stronger, but, unless you are thinking of making it into a "Dodgem" Mayfair, MDF Is more than strong enough for your average child.

Can I also suggest you read as many posts as possible befor you start to do anything other than familiarise yourself with the plans, there are a wealth of suggestions on here with many recomendations and very valid reasons to build the toy slightly differently to the plan and build manual's suggested method.

There have been very few Mayfair builders on here, so can I suggest to cut down on reading time, that you read the Toylander 1 and 2 threads, you will soon see lots of helpfull suggestions.

Regards,

Brian.

Thanks Lee and Brian
Lee, I have had a play and had the same issue, it is hard to make it look right with the changes, will crack on and put some pictures on if I ever crack it.
Brian, Not sure I can change the displayed name, can it be done by the administrator or should I just delete the account and start again?

Thanks again

Nigel

Hello Nigel.
No problem with your avatar name, leave as is, there are a lot of other avatar names that are strange, it's just that when we want to reply to you, it looks better if we can address the person rather than an unidentifiable nickname.:D

:) Hi Nigel on here there is no such thing as a silly question. The MDF or plywood debate, we used MDF it it easier to get a better paint finish on and if weight is a problem is slightly lighter. Its also easier to cut and sand to assorted shapes. Final choice is yours but keep an eye on some of the plywood finshes as our last trip via Wickes/B&Q we saw some very bad finished on the ply that would have needed a lot of preparation.
