Project Mayfair!
« on: 23 January, 2010, 11:40:55 PM »
So here we go!

Some of you may remember me from a few months ago when I first joined with the intention of building a series 2. Since then I've sort of changed my mind & decided to go down the route of a Mayfair. Not nearly as popular it seems but a lot simpler to build & generally cheaper to make. I think this is a better place for me to start & the plans for the series 2 can be put away for the future!

Anyway, I've been doing a simple drawing to show what I'm aiming for. At the moment it's more or less standard with the addition of a door or doors, slightly taller front end to keep the sides a bit higher & possibly a rear opening access. It's based loosely on Brum at the back with a fake folded down roof. The top one is my idea & the bottom one is roughly what the original looks like.

I decided to post this so I can compare it with what I actually end up with! I'm sure things will change along the way but this will be a good place to start. Comments are welcome, especially if I've missed something really obvious  ;)

All the best,
lee

I don't know about designing it to be honest, just tweaking it here and there. I don't really like the way it has a boot lid at the back, hence the longer back in an Austin 7 style (don't know if that's what brum is meant to be?)

I'd like to make the front end a bit wider where it leaves the windscreen but I haven't come up with a way that will be reasonably simple to make. The problem is the front end has to be narrow to allow the wheels to turn. I like this picture as it doesn't look like most Austin 7's with the headlights further back...

First of all I'm hoping to make a push along one with the holes etc for motor mounting as I don't have enough money to get everything now, then move on from there when I've saved a bit more up!
All the best,
lee

Hi Lee,

The Mayfair was designed and launched long before Brum and the main difference is that the Mayfair is an Edwardian car and the excellent Brum is probably based upon a thirties model which of course came through WWII to the forties. I think your idea is very good and any help I can give you will be most welcome. Best wishes Richard

HI MATE.
having read your post may i suggest that you look though some of the posts as there is one on here about using the motor from a drill as they are now cheap as chips and it just seems a shame to build a push along. And if your like the rest of us Loonie's on here you'll love the challenge of trying to make it move without the hard work involved in pushing it!!. Anyway good luck on your build and enjoy!!!
regards
max
It's Tore who is powering a Mayfair by Battery Drill.

Howdy!

I did see the post about using a drill, I'm just not sure it would last the distance. I know it's fine for 15 - 30 second bursts when drilling but I can't see it running at full tilt for an hour or so on a regular basis. It won't be push along forever, just until I can magic up enough money for the motor/speed control etc. Thanks for pointing it out anyway.

All the best,
lee

Morning Richard.

If the qustion is about the plastic trailer mudguards, I saw them in a camping and caravan shop in Sheffield, was known as CCC but has a change of name now although I think CCC will find them.

I did not have a tape measure with me at the time but I was interested in them as wheel arch liners for the T2.

Brian.

Are you going to the Detling show Lee?

It's a bit too far for me up here in Yorkshire,  but I hope to go to the Stoneleigh, Newark and Stafford shows.

I suppose I have done kit building now having built my son and daughter a car each, but I can play with the Toylander T2 to my hearts content as it is stored round here for my grandson, and he dosen't seem to mind how many mods I make to it.:D

Brian.

Yes Brian, off to Detling with a friend who's building a haynes roadster. I've always wanted to build a kit car, my dad was always into cars when I was growing up & he must have planted that seed of interest! Unfortunately the only house we could afford to buy when I moved from home was one without car access so goodbye kit car idea  :-[ Luckily when I came across the Toylander I saw my chance to build a kit car in minature  ;D

As you can see I'm working on some bits to indulge myself like the disc/ caliper setup and a nice dashboard. Detling should provide a few of the bits I'll need in a few months plus I get to look at all of the 'grown up' kit cars  ;)

All the best,
lee
