Hi,

Definately something we need to look into as we would like to take ours to shows with our Austin 1100. So third party insurance sounds a must.

Just had a call from the insurance broker.  Something worth noting for others that will be taking out insurance on their Toylander.  On the proposal form there is a serial number, or registration mark.  I'd left both blank, but they need an identifer for the vehicle for it to be insured.  Our Toylander has no serial number, but it does have a set of number plates (although not a real registration)  They were happy to use the registration on the plates as the identifer.

Insurance / health and safety is all a huge can of worms I am the enemy in that respect as i work for the health and safety executive, I own and show Sinclair C5's (electric but have peddles) a mini steamer and have a vast collection of old tractors the EU idiots are always coming up with new ideas and plans, regulations change daily, the answer is no-one knows and has a definate answer. I asked my boss how i stood personally about toylander C5, steamer everything (and he knows his stuff, but is a realist) he said your insured you have a brain cell your often at organised events, i wouldnt worry until there is somethng to worry about. Has there ever been a legal action to date? NO so dont worry about it...

Im health and safety officer for a steam rally / show where we have vehicles of all types rolling around with jo public its a hotbed of possibilities. I took my boss to another show he was concerned but said their are no concrete regulations and very little definate information to go on, there are guidelines very little else. Basically until a prosecution is raised or taken not alots going to change. To add i drive my tractors on the road as do others some can go 40 mph plus you can drive those at 16 having taken no form of driving test and the vehicle itself having no form of mot test, it should be taxed mine are but im one of very few, and mine are insured, but are all for the road, now im 16 driving a 5 ton 40mph brick down the public highway I think thats a far bigger issue that a toylander on a pavement??? What im basically saying is they have far bigger fish to fry....

As for traffic officers being over concerned, here is one for you, got pulled over last week (VOSA) in my private HGV i run for the tractors, out came an 15 yr old chap, looked at my tax (private HGV) bet he thought its xmas here, Looked round checking everything and i keep my truck mint!!!, said no tacho i said no dont need one, private HGV, he found nothing said Im going to check the diesel, bearing in mind id filled up 5 mins down the road, went and got his test kit, and tested a tank, He took his sample and YES it was red, he said your running on red diesel, I took a step back looked suprised and said, yes mate i am, but how far do you think a V8 Scania 530 go's on 5 gallons? he looked at me strange, and said sir this is a serious offence, i said yeah it is, have you seen what that tanks connected too, he said its not my job to know, smilling i turned back and said well done you just tested the night heater tank, which is fine to run on red, now do you want to try the huge stainless steel tank on the other side of the lorry, you should find thats connected to the engine and full of white diesel...!!! amazingly they let me on my way..

Moral of the story worry about it when you need to or your told too otherwise just enjoy....

We've now got our insurance certificates through the post, one public liability, and one motor insurance.  It's bonkers that we have a certificate of motor insurance for the Toylander, makes me grin everytime I think of it!  ;D  Shame the policy had to be in my name, otherwise Jenna could have been building up her no claims bonus at age 3!  ;D

Hi Dale,
It is a shame that your little 'un can't have the insurance in her name, is it a requirement of the insurance that it has to be in your name?
Is Jenna a named Driver at least?

It's something I'll have to get in the near future, just saving for the Road Tax for my car at the moment, but will sort it at the end of the month.

Now don't go cancelling it, or PC Plod will impound the car!! ::) ;D

Thanks for the update,
Keep Smiling,
Regards,
Mark.
Bloke with too much time on his hands!

The policy has to be in my name.  There was no need to add Jenna as a named driver as policy covers any driver of any age!
